Remembering a Dear Friend

Yesterday was the birthday of a dear, old friend. He has passed years ago, but he wrote something that speaks to me today, as it did then…it actually made its way out of a storage box this morning…go figure!!!

One Day

We move along, doing the best we can,

Occasionally testing the boundaries.

Some, more than others, become bored with the gift of life

and stray far away from the path of righteousness.

And the day will come when each of us will look into the mirror and say,

“It is I who I must wake up with in the morning

and it is I who I must sleep with at night.

It is I  to whom I must answer.”

So begins morality and a sense of values, which will deliver the owner a life-long high, which is greater than any chemical on Earth can induce.

Nobody knows for certain, but there is a belief among us that this character is not only carried through our mortal lives, but is also carried into the hereafter…and a clean conscience is a clear path to eternal peace.     BF

Happy Birthday, my old-soul friend. Thank you for these words and many others we have shared. I think of you often. Rest in peace.

Writing Challenge

I received this challenge from JOYFUL2BEE.

Here are the rules:

1. Open a blank document.
2. Set a stop watch timer to 5 or 10 minutes, whichever length you prefer.
3. Your topic is at the foot of this post BUT DO NOT SCROLL DOWN TO SEE IT UNTIL YOU ARE READY WITH YOUR TIMER!!!
4. Once you start writing do not stop until the alarm sounds!  Do not cheat by going back and correcting spelling and grammar using spell check (it is only meant for you to reflect on your own control of sensible thought flow and for you to reflect on your ability to write with correct spelling and grammar.)
5. You may or may not pay attention to punctuation or capitals
6. At the end of your post write down the number of words to give an idea of how much you can write within the time frame.
7. Put the whole document onto your post and nominate 5 others and give them a new topic. Remember to copy paste the rules in!

So, now that I have copied the rules in, let me say something that happened and why I am going to change this up a bit.

I read the entire post, which right off the bat, tells you not to read the question. Well, her entire post includes her question and answer. So, I sent her a reply and she gave me a new question. That worked well for me, but the snag was that I felt I had to write immediately, so as not to spend time thinking about my response! Wow, I take these things seriously, don’t I?

Here is what I wrote:

What quality do I like best in myself and how did I attain that quality?

I like that I am open-minded and non-judgemental. I know we all have opinions, as human beings, but it is important to me that people let me live and believe as I see appropriate for me and it is only right that I would do the same. This is not so much a quality that I inherited, at least not to my knowledge. My father had very strong opinions and he did not mind voicing them. My mother was pretty non-descript in her opinions and rarely voiced much. Occasionally, you would know she was mad.

What does it mean not to judge? Does it mean no opinion? Does it mean you have to always agree? To me, it means that I can accept the person, even if I don’t agree. When our children misbehave, we still love them. When they have different opinions, we still love them. We can get mad at them, but still love them. No, we don’t have to love everyone in the way we love our children, but the similar concept applies to judgment.

I believe it is not my place to judge. That belongs to a much higher power. “Judge not, that you be not judged.” I will never be perfect, in this life anyway, but I will strive to love others as I would like to be loved…or liked…or accepted.

That is almost 10 minutes…246 words. (with a few interruptions from my wonderful hubby!)

SOOOOO…drumroll please!

I will write the question as the last line of this post. I nominate these five blogging friends to play along:

Edward at mytwosentences (I KNOW you can write more than two at a time!)

Shawn at mojoshawn  (hailing from the Midwest, like me, what do you say?)

“Scotty” at Scotty73 (one of the wittiest bloggers I follow…is your name Scotty?)

“Jack” at Uptown Jack (I enjoy your combination of image and word…and think you might be named Jack.)

“Lumar” at Let There Be Peace On Earth (because I would love that too!)

OK…whew…tough to pick just five, but maybe another challenge will come along! And by the way, check out these blogs…you might find one you really like. I tried to pick some diverse bloggers.

So, the question is…

Do you remember that time, say 5 years ago or so, when you were extremely upset…  does it really matter now?
